examples

university – a university

house – a house

the italic words above are pronounced with consonant sounds, so that the artilce “amust be used before the words ” university ” and ” house”

an is used before words begining with vowels sounds

examples

apple  – an apple

hour – an hour

the italic letters above are pronounced with vowel sounds, so that the article an must be used before the words  ” apple”  and ” hour “

notice that either “an” or “a” has no plura forms.

the plural form of  a book is books
